Inclusion of Right to Information as a subject in the University curriculum and in the curriculum of Media Studies

A preliminary discussion regarding the

inclusion of Right to Information in to the curricular of Universities and Media Studies has been held on 10th May, 2018 at the Auditorium of the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and with the participation of all universities coming under the purview of the UGC.

Majority of the Heads of Departments participated in the discussion in which the following proposals have been put forward.

  • To include the subject of Right to Information in to related disciplines such as Medialogy, Mass Media and Law and to introduce this as a module in to the orientation programme of unrelated disciplines.
  • Conducting awareness programmes on Right to Information for all academic and non-academic professional of each university.
  • Appointment of a consultant in each university to make decisions and provide guidance regarding this Act.
  • Conducting a residential workshop for all such officials.
  • Appointment of Information Officers and Designated Officers for each university and to train them.
  • Conducting a preliminary discussion with all Vice Chancellors in order to commence this programme.

Accordingly, a discussion with Vice Chancellors has been held on 13th June, 2018 at the University Grants Commission in which Additional Secretary Mrs. Thilaka Jayasundara and the Director, Mr. J.W.S. Kithsiri represented the Ministry of Finance and Mass Media and Mr. Jagath Liyanarachchi, Director, National Centre for Media has participated in the discussion. 

At the discussion, all agreed first to conduct an awareness session on the Right to Information Act and later to implement all agreed proposals to make aware students on this Act.
